I haven't applied for open calls in a few years since I had to prioritize family and other life matters. When I did apply, I never got feedback other than the standard thank you for applying, there were 34793493498634 applications, all very good, sorry you were not selected this time, better luck next time.
Needless to say, when I finally did apply for something, I was pleasantly surprised to find out I was selected! The publication is called Arts to Hearts Project and it was for their issue of 100 Emerging Artists of 2026, which was curated by Sonia Borrell. The most valuable part of being selected was in fact, the feedback.
Originality & Creative Voice The work reflects a distinct personal approach and a clear sense of visual language. The choices in composition and subject indicate an independent direction. Continuing to push the idea further—either through material exploration or conceptual depth—could make the work even more compelling. Connection to the Theme The piece engages thoughtfully with the theme and presents a personal interpretation rather than a literal response. The way the idea is translated visually shows intention and awareness of the broader concept of the project. Concept & Written Statement The statement explains the intention behind the work and gives helpful context for the viewer. Expanding slightly on the thinking process, influences, or decisions made during the creation of the work would strengthen the link between the concept and the final image. Viewer Engagement The work holds attention and communicates a clear mood or idea. There is a sense of direction in how the viewer is guided through the piece. As the practice develops, building further layers of meaning or visual tension could deepen the viewer’s engagement. Presentation & Submission The submission was clearly presented and well documented. The image quality and supporting information were sufficient for review and reflected a professional level of care. Overall Remarks This submission shows a strong sense of intention and a developing voice. The work communicates its ideas effectively while leaving room for further exploration and growth in future projects.
From this, I am able to gauge what I am doing right, what people who are engaging with my art are getting from it. It also allows me to see what is the thought process when curators are selecting a work of art for publication, or even to be included in a show. What do I need to work on and make clear when positioning myself in the art market. There are still many things I need to learn and work on, but with practice, I hope to get better.
